Canadian Abortion Rights Action League

  • Corporate body
  • ca. 1985 - mid-1990s

The Windsor chapter of the Canadian Abortion Rights Action League (CARAL), was a feminist group active in Windsor, Ontario, in the 1980s and 1990s, focusing on reproductive rights for women in Canada. CARAL Windsor was originally named the Windsor Association for Reproductive Choice (WARC) but was also sometimes known as Pro-Choice Windsor. WARC was most likely formed in 1984 but may have been active beforehand. The group officially became a chapter of CARAL in May 1989. The national CARAL group was formed in 1974 and was originally named The Canadian Association for Repeal of the Abortion Law. CARAL’s Windsor chapter provided resources to women in the Windsor-Essex region who required information on reproductive and abortion services, as well as counselling services. The chapter worked closely with other local feminist groups and was affiliated with the Windsor Women’s Incentive Center (WIC). The date of CARAL Windsor’s disbandment is not known, but was most likely in the mid-1990s, as the period’s intense abortion activism subsided in Canada.
