H.L. MacPherson fonds

This fonds contains several images of H.L. McPherson, typescripts and correspondence related to his work as a special correspondent for the Montreal Gazette in the late 1950s (commenting on Canadian politics, economy, and society from a Windsor perspective), and correspondence McPherson received in response to his columns in the Windsor Star, which touch on topics including walnut trees, water fluoridation, annexation of other municipalities to Windsor, and the federal government. There are copies of a 2019 essay about McPherson by his daughter Helen Wainman and a 2020 reminiscence by his son-in-law Gord Wainman about Gord’s father Stanley Holmes Wainman (a First World War veteran). Also included is a copy of the 1991 inventory of the complete original McPherson accession. Although the clippings themselves were deaccessioned ca. 1994-95, the inventory serves as a guide to the months and years in which McPherson’s columns appeared in the Windsor Star.

Housekeeping ephemera collection

This collection brings together a variety of small, ephemeral publications intended to appeal to wives, mothers, and other domestic workers. The bulk are from the first half of the 20th century, consisting of advertisements for domestic goods with helpful tips for housekeeping, a household account book (unused), and booklets outlining medicinal uses for household items such as yeast. One brochure offers information about converting sewing patterns, as part of Canada’s transition to metric measurements, 1970-1980. A leaflet originally included in a Toronto newsmagazine ca. 1930s-1940s features a knitting pattern for an infant's coat and bonnet.

This fonds consists of alphabetically-arranged subject files pertinent to Hugh Peacock's time as MPP for Windsor West, 1967-1971. They contain records, reports, and other information pertinent to local, provincial, and national issues of the day as well as issues of special concern to the labour-oriented New Democratic Party. These include affordable housing, credit unions, public utilities (including electricity and natural gas), the environment, health care, unemployment, workers’ compensation, child welfare and family services, child care services, funding for separate schools in Ontario, municipal and federal taxation, trade and economic development, postsecondary institutions, and government regulation of tobacco, alcohol, and guns.

J. Clark Keith fonds

The J. Clark Keith papers contain a record of activities pursued by one of Windsor’s most eminent engineers during his career with the Essex Border Utilities Commission (1920-1935) and the subsequent Windsor Utilities Commission (1935-1957), largely in the form of personal correspondence and scrapbooks. Also included are numerous reports, subject files, a small number of engineering specifications, blueprints, contracts, and excerpts from Keith’s book The Windsor Utilities Commission and Its Antecedent Commissions, covering nearly seventy years of urban history in the Border Cities. The fonds provides detailed insight into projects such as the Wyandotte Street extension and construction of a filtration plant at Ford City, as well as broader issues of city planning and legislation. Hospitals and parks are also dealt with, thanks to the EBUC’s broad mandate. Collectively, the records provide an excellent survey of the diverse responsibilities shouldered by the utilities commission in Windsor’s development, and the central role J. Clark Keith played at its helm.

The fonds is arranged into seven sub-series: Sub-series A contains subject files; Sub-series B contains annual reports; Sub-series C contains other reports; Sub-series D contains financial reports; Sub-series E contains contracts; Sub-series F contains a diary; and Sub-series G contains scrapbooks.

This fonds consists of a single file containing promotional publications related to celebrated Canadian conservationist Jack Miner, his work, ideas, and legacy. Many show the involvement of his son Manly, and touch on his migratory bird sanctuary near Kingsville, Ontario.

Jean Baptiste Le Tourneaux dit Jeannet fonds

This fonds consists of a single land grant document on parchment with a very large wax seal attached. The document, signed on 10 March 1804, grants 314 acres of land from the Province of Upper Canada to “Jean Baptiste Tourneaux.” The land was designated as lot 78 in the first, second, and third concessions of the Parish of L’Assomption (Assumption) in the Township of Sandwich. This lot extended from present-day Salter Avenue in the west to Bruce Avenue in the east, from the Detroit River in the north down to the Roseland Golf Course in the south. Janette Avenue, which runs through the lot, was named for Jean Baptiste Le Tourneaux dit Jeannet, the grantee.

This fonds contains records from University of Windsor librarian Jennifer Soutter’s 2006-2007 term on the Library Board of the Windsor Public Library (WPL). The records include administrative and financial documents, a controversial operational review and subsequent strategic planning exercise, discussion of a possible library branch in the historic John Campbell School, and contextual documents related to city demographics, public library models, and Ontario-wide public library initiatives. Many documents contain Soutter’s annotations.

Jim Davies fonds

This fonds consists of records pertaining to Jim Davies’ personal life and his involvement in Windsor’s gay community and other activist circles. Series I: Papers includes material relating to the local labour movement and the local women’s movement during the 1970s, including reflections on labour theory and labour unions, as well as minutes and outlines relating to the establishment of The Women’s Place and the Lincoln Road Co-op Daycare, both of which responded to issues identified by the local women’s movement. There are two Windsor Gay Unity membership cards, several documents relating to the discriminatory firing of Jim Davies from the Wandlyn Viscount Motor Hotel, a Social Work course assignment by Davies proposing measures to reduce discrimination against gays and lesbians, and a City of Windsor proclamation of Pride Day 1998. Series II: Photographs includes images of staff involved with the AIDS Committee of Windsor, participants in several Windsor Pride parades and associated events, as well as personal photographs of Jim Davies with his friends and loved ones.

This fonds contains personal, professional, and domestic records from the life of Joan Somers Sullivan in the later-20th and early-21st centuries. Series I (Personal Records) includes reminiscences about Joan, medical information, clippings related to community activitism (including traffic problems in Old Sandwich), and personal journals. Series II (Professional Records) features her resumé and qualifications, as well as administrative records, correspondence, public talks, research material, clippings, and publications connected with her pioneering effort to unionize legal secretaries in Windsor, Ontario during the 1970s. This includes talks for events held by the Faculties of Law at the University of Windsor and the University of Western Ontario, and articles published in the Windsor Woman women’s liberation newspaper and The Oyez Windsor law students’ newspaper. Series III (Domestic Records) contains recipes and household hints used in her later-life personal housekeeping, as well as lists of her annual Christmas baking.

This fonds primarily contains the personal and professional correspondence of Father Stan Murphy received or sent in the course of his several decades as director of the Christian Culture Series (CCS) at Assumption College, as well as associated photographs, ephemera, and recordings of the lectures and other events. Some files relate to the Christian Culture Gold Medal and/or its recipients.

Also included are records relating to other elements of Father Murphy’s work at Assumption, as well as recordings of significant events at Assumption in the later 20th/early 21st centuries, including convocation ceremonies, CCS, and non-CCS lectures.

The fonds has been arranged by carrier media into Series I (Textual Files), which contains correspondence, biographical material, photographs connected with textual files, scrapbooks, ephemera, and more; and Series II (Recordings), which includes many formats of audio recording, as well as many more photographic images and some textual materials saved in digital formats.
