This fonds primarily contains records created by the Hiram Walker-Gooderham & Worts Ltd. corporation in the course of their business activities, 1928-1971. It is divided into four series. Series I contains a short history of entrepreneur Hiram Walker and his company town of Walkerville, 1858-1958. Series II contains directors’ reports and annual reports (1928-1971 with some gaps) produced by Hiram Walker-Gooderham & Worts. Series III contains photocopies of documents produced in connection with Hiram Walker-Gooderham & Worts’ 1935-1936 offering of shares on the New York Stock Exchange. Series IV contains a souvenir booklet commemorating the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, produced by Gooderham & Worts.

This fonds consists of alphabetically-arranged subject files pertinent to Hugh Peacock's time as MPP for Windsor West, 1967-1971. They contain records, reports, and other information pertinent to local, provincial, and national issues of the day as well as issues of special concern to the labour-oriented New Democratic Party. These include affordable housing, credit unions, public utilities (including electricity and natural gas), the environment, health care, unemployment, workers’ compensation, child welfare and family services, child care services, funding for separate schools in Ontario, municipal and federal taxation, trade and economic development, postsecondary institutions, and government regulation of tobacco, alcohol, and guns.

This fonds primarily contains records related to a parcel of land along the Detroit River in what is now Riverside, designated as Lot 116. This property was once a farmstead, later subdivided for residential use and the site of Edith Cavell elementary school. One file contains a small number of documents (1849-1938) from the Parent family, largely relating to the home, goods, and property of their farm. There are also 8 photographs of the property (ca. 1920s and 1950s) including the farmhouse, the school, a streetcar shelter, and a young Haines Cox. Several blueprints and plans depict Lot 116, its planned subdivision (“Lundy Heights”), and drains, ca. 1900-1918. Copies of two newspaper stories provide context for the Parent house and the Edith Cavell school.

One file contains material (1824-1833) related to a Parent cousin named Paul LeDuc, in connection with LeDuc’s lease of unceded lands in Bkejwanong Territory (along the St. Clair River delta) from the Anishinaabe community there that would later be known as Walpole Island First Nation. These handwritten records include receipts, notes, and a lease. Of special note is a land use agreement between LeDuc and four chiefs identified as Chippewa (also given as Ojibwe) from the Chenail Ecarte community, signed by the chiefs with animal doodems (totems).

This fonds contains several images of H.L. McPherson, typescripts and correspondence related to his work as a special correspondent for the Montreal Gazette in the late 1950s (commenting on Canadian politics, economy, and society from a Windsor perspective), and correspondence McPherson received in response to his columns in the Windsor Star, which touch on topics including walnut trees, water fluoridation, annexation of other municipalities to Windsor, and the federal government. There are copies of a 2019 essay about McPherson by his daughter Helen Wainman and a 2020 reminiscence by his son-in-law Gord Wainman about Gord’s father Stanley Holmes Wainman (a First World War veteran). Also included is a copy of the 1991 inventory of the complete original McPherson accession. Although the clippings themselves were deaccessioned ca. 1994-95, the inventory serves as a guide to the months and years in which McPherson’s columns appeared in the Windsor Star.

This fonds consists of two files of photocopied business records from what appear to have been original 19th century ledger books. One set of documents covers income and expenses for the period 1873-1875, including real estate, wood products, and payments to individuals, mentioning Caleb Coatsworth and others. Another set of documents covering 1883-1897 includes accounts of vessels listed as reporting and clearing from the Port of Romney, Caleb Coatsworth’s dock, and the Romney Castoria [?] outside the Port of Chatham. The latter set of documents includes lists of steamers and schooners with their national affiliations and tonnages, as well as lists of merchandise (such as lumber and fish) exported from the Port of Romney.

This fonds contains materials created or collected by CARAL Windsor and affiliated organizations between 1968 and 1994. It has been divided into six series reflecting the group’s pro-choice activism during a tumultuous period of uncertainty around abortion legality and access in Canada. Series I to V contain records of day-to-day operations, advocacy, and resource sharing by CARAL itself, as follows: Series I - Administrative Materials; Series II – Correspondence; Series III - Publicity and Awareness; Series IV - National Office Materials; Series V -Resources. Series VI - Windsor Women’s Incentive Centre (WIC) contains a small number of records related to the WIC’s broader support for women’s issues in Windsor-Essex in the same time period.

This fonds documents aspects of the personal and professional life – and particularly the First World War experiences – of Captain Arthur Flowers, a British military careerist and mid-20th c. immigrant to Essex County. Series I contains records and images relating to his personal life and political views; Series II contains records relating to his military career, including correspondence and health records from the First World War; Series III contains official First World War correspondence and publications circulated by the British military to boost morale. Series IV contains records relating to Flowers’ wife Annie, including correspondence, a 1914 travel diary, and souvenirs of the British Royal Family.

The fonds contains original typescripts of 1 letter and 5 poems (2 of which are poem cycles) authored by Raymond Knister. The 2 poem cycles, “Seven Poems,” and “A Row of Stalls” were published during his lifetime, in 1922 and 1925 respectively. The rest were published posthumously with “March Wind” in 1983, and “To One Lost” and “Still Young,” under the title “Until, Still Young,” in 2003. The poems are largely about relationships and emotions, with “A Row of Stalls” covering rural life which Knister is known for. The letter was written in 1931 to a regular correspondent known only as E.F. and covers topics including writing, specifically commenting on the Canadian writing scene, his father’s death, and his family life.

This fonds consists of a single file containing letters and reports by and to Miss Elizabeth Gillespie, a nurse working with the World Health Organization during the years 1952-1959. Gillespie reports on the state of the profession of nursing in Egypt, Sudan, and India during this period.

This fonds contains 20 manuscript love letters written by modernist writer Katherine Mansfield to her lover Garnet Trowell, September-November 1908, and 1 letter from Mansfield’s close friend Ida Baker to Trowell. Mansfield’s letters are breathless and passionate, regretting their time apart and looking forward to a future together. These are the only Mansfield letters known to have survived from this period of her life.
