Academic Calendars of Assumption College and University fonds

This fonds contains preservation copies of academic calendars created by Assumption College or Assumption University of Windsor, between 1901 and 1963. From 1951-1956, they also included courses from Holy Names College, an affiliated women’s college. Although the series is incomplete, this is the most comprehensive set currently available.

The calendars go by several names and take corresponding forms, including: Catalogue, Course of Study, Bulletin of Information, Announcement, and Calendar. Included are general calendars as well as calendars for graduate programs, summer session, and the Division of Extension. The contents of the calendars vary by year. In addition to information about programs of study and course offerings, some calendars include additional information about faculty, students, alumni, athletics, clubs and activities, scholarships and prizes, and the costs of tuition and board. Brief histories of Assumption College also appear, as do photographs of student life and campus settings.

Adams/Bowlby family music collection

This fonds contains five personal volumes of mid- to late-19th century sheet music belonging to female members of the Adams and Bowlby families of Canada West/Ontario. It has been organized into two series, reflecting the two family lines from which the women came: Series I (Adams family) and Series II (Bowlby family). Each volume bears the name of its owner and contains an assortment of vocal or instrumental music designed for domestic use. For the middle-classes of 19th century North America it was common practice to conclude a young woman’s years of musical training by compiling her sheet music into a personalized bound volume. Each volume therefore reflects the owner/performer’s tastes, training, and proficiency, which songs, composers, and social dance styles were popular during the years of her training, and what music was available to her either through purchase or as a gift. The resulting volumes were used in subsequent years for home or community performance among family, friends, and neighbours, as well as for personal entertainment. As such, the Adams/Bowlby volumes offer snapshots of Victorian musical culture in their owners’ small communities during southern Ontario’s late-colonial/early-Confederation period. They also provide a glimpse into one means (musical accomplishment) by which young middle-class women could improve their chances of economic security: either by demonstrating a degree of gentility that resulted in a desirable marriage or by acquiring skills that would allow them to find employment as music teachers. Alumni of Assumption College and University fonds

This fonds contains publications, along with a small amount of correspondence and ephemera, relating to graduates (alumni) of Assumption College and University dating back to 1870. All items were produced in the 20th c. but may include information related to 19th c. alumni as well. Publications present in the fonds include the Catalogue of Assumption College, Kaleidoscope, Alumni Times, and Alumni Chatter. Also present are several 1990s issues of the University of Windsor’s Emeritus Society News. Of note: words and music for Assumption fight songs.

Basilians at Assumption College and University fonds

This fonds principally contains records connected with the Congregation of St. Basil (Basilian Fathers) whose members administered Assumption College and Assumption University from 1870 onward. Secondarily, it contains varied records that document the history of Assumption and its evolution over time. Included are legal documents, memos, correspondence, ephemera, constitutions and rules, historical narratives and memoirs, reports, and a variety of Basilian publications and formal histories of Assumption. Some items pertain to Catholic education broadly, or to the history of the Catholic Church in Southwestern Ontario. Of special note are Assumption fight songs and a victory song, and the Second World War war diary of Rev. Mike Dalton, a military chaplain.

This fonds consists of 31 student projects depicting historical and contemporary features of Southwestern Ontario (primarily Windsor/Essex County but also Sarnia/Lambton County), created by Bachelor of Education students in History or Social Studies courses in the 1980s. They take a variety of forms, including illustrated storybooks, scrapbooks, captioned photo albums, reports, lesson plans, activities, or fact sheets. The projects themselves are of variable quality, but the photographs and ephemera included in many projects provide valuable insight into local landmarks or industries in the 1980s. The collection has been arranged into six thematic series: Series I (Overviews by Geographic Area), Series II (Cultural Attractions), Series III (Sociocultural Groups and Histories), Series IV (Local Government), Series V (Business and Industry), Series VI (Transportation).

Warning: The N-word appears in a historical quotation in one project; stereotyped depictions of Indigenous peoples appear in another. See finding aid for details.

These records reflect the work of various municipal offices, 1855-1947. They are divided into eight series: I. Malden Township school records (1855-1944); II. Essex County court records (1902-1919); III. Essex County Registers Office records (1861-1870s?); IV. Essex County Clerk’s Office records (1924-1935); V. Essex County Main Lists (1926-1932); VI. Essex County Treasurer’s Office records (1858-1947); VII. Kingsville and Point Pelee Navigation Company records (1892-1894); and VIII. Additional Accessions.

The Treasurer’s Office records document financial transactions as recorded in cash books, fee books, receipt books, cheque books, and ledgers. These include general records as well as records relating specifically to the Highways Committee (1916-1928; 1934-1941), criminal convictions (1861), and property transfers (1908-1910; 1917-1925).

This fonds consists of a single file containing letters and reports by and to Miss Elizabeth Gillespie, a nurse working with the World Health Organization during the years 1952-1959. Gillespie reports on the state of the profession of nursing in Egypt, Sudan, and India during this period.

Essex/Kent Archival Project fonds

This fonds contains records created ca. 1979-1981 in an attempt to identify and catalogue historical records found in both urban and rural parts of Essex and Kent counties which could be of use to those interested in local and family history. At the time, most of these records were not held in formal archives or other repositories, but rather were inactive files held on-site in the institutions that created them. The fonds has been divided into two series. Series I contains the original index cards used in the field to gather data for the Ontario’s Heritage project (ca. 1980-1981?) from both Essex and Kent County locations. These remain as much as possible in their original order, arranged by geographic location and institution. Series II contains a bound copy of the Windsor Archival Project report (1979) focusing on city records, and an incomplete typescript draft of Ontario’s Heritage: A Guide to Archival Resources, Vol. 10 Essex and Kent Counties which includes only Essex County records (ca. 1981?).

Although some of the record collections detailed have subsequently been donated to archives (including Leddy Library Archives & Special Collections), the index cards and reports still remain a valuable starting point for those seeking leads on archival sources.

Finances of Assumption College and University fonds

This fonds contains financial records of Assumption College and University, ca. 1856-1999. These include general cash books, financial statements, correspondence, and records of accounts, as well as real estate acquired, constructed, maintained, or sold by Assumption and/or the Basilian Fathers in the vicinity of the present-day campus, from Tecumseh Road north to the Detroit River. Included are land deeds, contracts, and other legal documents, as well as architectural or schematic drawings and specifications for campus buildings. Notably, this includes records of property acquired in the early days of the college, and campus properties sold by Assumption in the 1960s to the University of Windsor. Of special note: a small number of 1950s-1960s records relating to Essex College, the non-denominational affiliated college that helped secure provincial government funding for the campus.

This fonds consists of alphabetically-arranged subject files pertinent to Hugh Peacock's time as MPP for Windsor West, 1967-1971. They contain records, reports, and other information pertinent to local, provincial, and national issues of the day as well as issues of special concern to the labour-oriented New Democratic Party. These include affordable housing, credit unions, public utilities (including electricity and natural gas), the environment, health care, unemployment, workers’ compensation, child welfare and family services, child care services, funding for separate schools in Ontario, municipal and federal taxation, trade and economic development, postsecondary institutions, and government regulation of tobacco, alcohol, and guns.
