Archief F 0169 - Frederick A. Hall fonds

Dr. Frederick Albert Hall (b. ca. late 1940s?) spent 34 years as a professor of Music and senior administrator at McMaster University. He began working at McMaster in 1974 and earned his doctorate during his early years there, successfully defending his dissertation on “The Polyphonic Italian Madrigal, 1638-1745” in 1979. He served a term as Chair of the Department of Music (1980-85), and later became Associate Dean, then Acting Dean, of the Faculty of Humanities. He ended his university career with two consecutive terms as Associate Vice-President Academic. Hall’s published work primarily appeared in the 1970s and 1980s and included examinations of musical cultures in 18th c. Halifax and the Maritimes, late 19th c. Windsor, Ontario, and late-19th/early 20th c. Hamilton, Ontario. In 2001 he co-authored an article with Dr. Geoffrey Rockwell (Director of McMaster’s Humanities Computing Centre) about the creation of a multidisciplinary database of performance in Victorian Hamilton, 1846-1946. Hall retired from McMaster in 2008, and subsequently worked as an independent music professional.
